The Department of American Indian Studies congratulates Anouk-Belle Janess and Jaycee Williford on being named 2026 Udall Undergraduate Scholars.
Janess, a junior majoring in Marine Biology and American Indian Studies, was recognized for her work at the intersection of marine conservation and Indigenous environmental stewardship. Her research and community-engaged work focus on climate change, coastal communities, and sustainable environmental solutions.
Williford, a sophomore majoring in Aquatic Conservation and Ecology and Marine Biology with a minor in American Indian Studies, was honored for his research on climate solutions in partnership with Tribal communities. His work examines how ocean alkalinity enhancement may affect culturally and ecologically important species in the Salish Sea.
The Udall Scholarship recognizes students who demonstrate leadership, public service, and commitment to issues related to Native American nations, Tribal public policy, or the environment. This year, Janess and Williford were among just 65 students selected nationwide.
We are proud to celebrate their accomplishments and the important work they are doing in collaboration with Indigenous communities.
