LUSHOOTSEED IN THE SEASONAL
CALENDAR. THIS COURSE BEGINS WITH
READINGS AND RESEARCH TO BUILD
DISCUSSIONS PERTAINING TO CULTURAL
CONNECTIONS OF CULTURAL CALENDARS,
HISTORICAL WAYS OF LIFE AND CULTURA
SENSITIVITIES. TOPICS OF RESEARCH
AND STUDY WILL INCLUDE STORIES OF
SEASONS, THE MOON CYCLES, TIDES,
COMMONLY USED LANGUAGE TERMS AND A
GEOGRAPHICAL STUDY THAT DEMONSTRATE
PLANT, FOOD SOURCES AND TYPICAL
WEATHER ALL OF WHICH TAKES PLACE
DURING EACH SEASON AND MONTH.
THE HISTORICAL STUDIES WILL PROVIDE
THE NECESSARY CONNECTIONS THAT WILL
BUILD AN UNDERSTANDING TO WHAT
CULTURAL ASPECTS STILL CONTINUE
TODAY AND AID IN THE PRODUCTION OF
MODERN CULTURAL CALENDAR AS EACH
STUDENT WILL CONSTRUCT AN INDIVIDUA
CALENDAR THROUGH THEIR OWN RESEARCH
ALTHOUGH NOT REQUIRED, THIS COURSE
IS AN EXCELLENT AVENUE FOR AN
ADVANCED STUDY OF THE AIS 3-QUARTER
SOUTHERN LUSHOOTSEED SEQUENCE
Catalog Description:
Analytical study of a language, with special focus on Southern Lushootseed of the Coast Salish. Emphasis on practical application with time devoted to sound transcription practice. Builds an understanding and appreciation of cultural calendars and historical ways of life, related to the cultural relations of the year, seasons, months, and days. Recommended: either AIS 313, AIS 314, or AIS 315.
